Cal might be without starting quarterback Chase Garbers the rest of the season, head coach Justin Wilcox told reporters Monday.

Garbers injured his right (throwing) shoulder when he was tripped up on a scramble and fell on the shoulder with just over a minute left in the first half Friday night against Arizona State in Berkeley, Calif. He is out indefinitely, Wilcox said.

Daily Cal Sports tweeted that there is a possibility Garbers could return before the end of the season.

The redshirt sophomore, who completed 9 of 12 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown Friday before getting hurt, has thrown for 952 yards and eight touchdowns with two interceptions this season.

As a part-time starter a season ago, Garbers threw for 1,506 yards and 14 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

Without Garbers, Arizona State pulled away from a 7-7 tie to beat the Golden Bears 24-17. Garber’s replacement, junior Devon Modster, completed 5 of 14 passes for 23 yards and was intercepted once.

Garbers was coming off the best game of his career, when he threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns as Cal defeated Ole Miss 28-20 in Oxford, Miss.

The Golden Bears (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) travel to Eugene, Ore., on Saturday to face the No. 13 Oregon Ducks.
