New Colorado head football coach Karl Dorrell is retaining four full-time assistants from the previous staff.

The group includes Darrin Chiaverini, who was a candidate for the head-coaching position after Mel Tucker’s sudden departure on Feb. 11, along with Tyson Summers, Darian Hagan and Brian Michalowski.

“It’s always important if you can maintain some continuity during a coaching change,” Dorrell said Thursday in a statement on the school’s website. “I’ve been around enough college and professional teams where doing so offers some stability.

“I had great conversations with all four and while I haven’t determined their exact roles as of yet, I am excited that we share the same goals and vision for the program. I am excited about all four and am looking forward to working with them.”

The Colorado release indicated that six assistant positions still need to be filled, and then the job responsibilities for Dorrell’s first staff will be determined.

Chiaverini, the wide receivers coach and assistant head coach for the Buffaloes before he became interim head coach when Tucker exited to Michigan State, has been on the Colorado staff for four years.

Hagan, a former Colorado quarterback who also has been on the staff the past four years as running backs coach, previously had that same position with the Buffs under head coach Dan Hawkins from 2006-10.

Summers, who was in his first year as defensive coordinator and safeties coach, is expected to continue running the defense for Dorrell. Michalowski coached the outside linebackers in his first year at Colorado.

Dorrell, 56, was named the 27th full-time head coach of the Buffaloes on Sunday.
