Utah quarterback Jason Shelley announced over social media that he is placing his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal.

“After a lot of praying and talking with my family, I have decided to enter my name in the NCAA transfer portal,” Shelley said in a statement on his Twitter account. “Thank you coaches for this opportunity to play for the University of Utah these last (three) seasons.”

Shelley’s decision to look elsewhere comes two months after former South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley announced his desire to move to Utah as a graduate transfer. Bentley will be eligible to play for the Utes in the fall.

If Shelley does transfer to another FBS program, he will have to miss the 2020 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Shelley has thrown for 1,205 yards and six touchdowns in 18 games over the last two seasons with Utah.

Bentley was a starter for the Gamecocks for half of his freshman season in 2016, then throughout the next two campaigns. He played in just one game for the Gamecocks in 2019 as he sustained a season-ending foot injury in the opener against North Carolina.

The injury allowed him to redshirt and leave open the possibility of playing another collegiate season.

Bentley passed for 7,527 yards, 55 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in 34 games for the Gamecocks.

Utah has a need at quarterback after three-year starter Tyler Huntley finished his career against Texas in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 31.
