The Whitman County Coroner’s Office determined that last month’s death of Washington State safety Bryce Beekman was caused by an accidental overdose of two drugs, including fentanyl.

The 22-year-old redshirt senior died on March 23 in Pullman, Wash. Police responded to a call about “breathing problems” at Beekman’s apartment and found him dead.

A press release issued Friday by coroner Annie Pillers said Beekman’s death stemmed from combining the powerful pain reliever fentanyl and the allergy drug promethazine. The death was ruled accidental.

Beekman started 13 games for the Cougars in 2019 after transferring from Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz. He had one year of eligibility remaining.

He finished fifth on the team with 60 tackles and added three pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception. He had eight tackles and one tackle for loss against Air Force in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 27.
