Washington State starting quarterback Jayden de Laura tested positive for COVID-19, multiple outlets reported Friday.

Later in the day, Washington State’s game at Stanford, slated for Saturday, was canceled by the Pac-12 when the Cougars fell below the conference’s minimum of 53 available scholarship players due to positive COVID-19 cases and contact tracing. The game was ruled a no-contest.

Redshirt freshman Gunner Cruz would have likely started in place of de Laura. Cruz would have been backed up by redshirt sophomore Cammon Cooper.

Cruz and Cooper have yet to appear in a college football game.

De Laura, a freshman from Honolulu, has completed 43 of 72 pass attempts for 548 yards with four touchdowns and an interception in the Cougars’ first two games. He has rushed for 54 yards and another touchdown.

Washington State (1-1, 1-1 Pac-12) is slated to host Washington on Nov. 27. Stanford (0-2, 0-2) is scheduled to visit California on the same date.
