Linebacker Trey DePriest, Alabama’s second-leading tackler last season, is serving what could be a brief suspension after an undisclosed violation of team rules, coach Nike Saban said Tuesday.
Saban also told the media after practice that leading receiver Amari Cooper has a strained foot that will sideline him for a few days. Cooper will be listed as day to day.
DePriest, who had 59 tackles last season, did not practice Tuesday for the preseason No. 1 ranked team and defending BCS champion. Saban indicated that DePriest could be back at practice in a week if he meets reinstatement obligations.
“We have a lot of respect for him, but he did something that was not a very smart thing,” Saban said, according to The Tuscaloosa News. “Hopefully, he will learn from it.”
The Crimson Tide open the season on Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech.
