Mac Jones was officially named Alabama’s starting quarterback on Monday.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said he has seen the improvement he was looking for from Jones.
“Mac has had a really good camp, really played well in the last scrimmage,” Saban said. “He’s done a really good job of taking on a leadership role. … We’re pleased with his development.”
Jones, a junior, started four games last season. The final three came after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending hip injury.
Overall, he played in 12 games and completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns while throwing three interceptions.
Freshman Bryce Young is listed second on the depth chart and redshirt freshman Paul Tyson is third.
Young is a five-star prospect from famed Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif., while Tyson is the great grandson of legendary former Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
No. 2 Alabama opens its season Saturday with an SEC game at Missouri.
