Former Georgia linebacker Brenton Cox, a five-star recruit in the 2018 class, has transferred to the Bulldogs’ arch-rival, the Florida Gators.
Cox was dismissed by Georgia on Sunday, according to UGASports.com, and the next day entered his name on the NCAA transfer portal. It didn’t take long for him to find a landing spot.
On Friday, his name appeared on the Florida roster.
Scott Carter, who posts on the official Florida Gators Twitter account, confirmed the addition of Cox, a 6-foot-4, 247-pound sophomore. In a subsequent tweet, he addressed the question on the mind of every Gators fan:
“For those asking about Cox’s immediate eligibility, to my knowledge that is undetermined at this point. He’ll have to file a waiver with #NCAA and #SEC and see where those chips fall. If new info becomes available, we’ll let you know …#Gators”
Cox is the third member of Georgia’s vaunted 2018 class to transfer. Quarterback Justin Fields was granted immediate eligibility at Ohio State. The NCAA denied the request of tight end Luke Ford, who returned to his home state to play at Illinois.
Cox, who was rated the No. 23 overall prospect in the 2018 class in the 247Sports composite rankings, played in 13 games for Georgia last season. He started one game, in the Sugar Bowl against Texas, when he made a season-high six tackles in a loss.
For the season, he made 20 tackles, including two for loss and a sack, also breaking up three passes.
He was arrested in April for a misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
A Georgia native, Cox initially pledged to Ohio State before decommitting just nine days before early National Signing Day in December 2017.
