Florida defensive back Brian Edwards, who was arrested Monday on a simple battery (dating violence) complaint, was released Tuesday from the Alachua County Jail after pleading not guilty at his first court appearance.

According to the Gainesville Police Department report, Edwards and his girlfriend of two years got into a dispute around 6 p.m. Monday. When the woman turned to leave, Edwards grabbed her neck to try to keep her from exiting.

Another witness saw the incident, according to the report, and called police, who saw there were marks on the woman’s neck and a scratch on her shoulder.

The 6-foot-2, 192-pound Edwards, 20, has appeared in 18 games in two seasons as a backup defensive back and special teams player for the Gators. He recorded seven tackles, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery as a true sophomore last season.

In another incident last year, Edwards was the passenger in the car of teammate Kadarius Toney’s during a traffic stop, where a loaded AR-15 was discovered in the back seat.

Another high-profile situation involving a Florida football player occurred this April.

The Tampa Bay Times first reported that Gators quarterback Jalon Jones, who entered the college football transfer portal on April 30, was accused of sexual battery by two women in separate incidents on April 6, according to a police report. Neither woman pursued charges.
