Florida junior quarterback Nick Sproles has entered the NCAA transfer portal with the intent of finding a school that can give him more playing time next season.

Gators coach Dan Mullen said Wednesday that Sproles will finish the season with the team.

“He’s what the transfer portal is for,” Mullen said on the SEC coaches weekly teleconference. “Nick Sproles is a guy that’s been one of the most valuable guys on our team. He’s not only the third-team quarterback, he’s the scout-team quarterback.

“He’s extremely intelligent. He’s going to graduate from Florida this spring. He’s why they put the transfer portal in, not for these other silly things that go on with it.

“Nick’s a guy that’s going to wrap up with us. He’s going to be with the team until the end of the season, and then he’s going to graduate. I know he’d really like the opportunity to go transfer and play at another school next year.”

Sproles has thrown just one pass with the Gators, that coming last season against Florida State.

Gators starter Feleipe Franks, a junior, suffered a season-ending ankle injury early in the season, and junior Kyle Trask took over that role. Redshirt freshman Emory Jones is the No. 2 quarterback.

Sproles understands the situation. He just wants to get on the field before his collegiate career runs out, and Mullen has pledged to help in that quest.

“We’ve met with him, and we’re going to help him do that as much as possible,” Mullen said. “He’s just trying to let everybody know that he’s out there.”
