The Georgia Bulldogs added former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken to their coaching staff, coach Kirby Smart announced Friday.
Monken, 53, spent just one season in Cleveland under former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens, and new coach Kevin Stefanski did not retain him.
“We are excited to add Todd to our staff,” Smart said in a news release. “He has a history of establishing explosive offenses at each and every stop in his impressive career in both the National Football League and at major college football programs.”
Monken’s mission will be to revive the Bulldogs’ offense, which ranked No. 72 in the nation in passing last season (fifth in the SEC) with 223.0 yards per game and No. 50 in scoring with 30.8 points per game (fifth in SEC). He’ll have to do it while breaking in a new quarterback as three-year starter Jake Fromm announced he will enter the NFL draft.
Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman is expected to fill the starting quarterback role in 2020.
Assistant coach James Coley, who called offensive plays for Georgia this past season, will transition to assistant head coach.
Prior to joining the Browns, Monken was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons. He went to Tampa Bay from Southern Mississippi, where he spent three seasons (2013-15) as head coach and compiled a 13-25 record.
He also spent two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Oklahoma State (2011-12). He served four seasons as the wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-10), was the passing game coordinator at LSU (2005-06) and was as an assistant at Louisiana Tech and Eastern Michigan.
