Georgia quarterback D’Wan Mathis was cleared to return one year after undergoing emergency brain surgery.

The news was reported by DawgNation, which said the redshirt freshman’s status was confirmed after undergoing an MRI.

Mathis took part in 2019 spring drills and in the G-Day spring game but then told team medical staff he was experiencing headaches. Georgia medical director Ron Courson recognized the symptoms and got Mathis to the hospital, where an MRI showed fluid around his brain. He had surgery hours later on May 23 to remove a cyst.

“We thank God for Ron Courson’s expertise and his medical team, because without them I don’t think all of this would have been possible for D’Wan,” Terence Mathis, the quarterback’s father, told DawgNation last summer. “I believe Georgia saved my son’s life.”

Mathis was cleared for non-contact drills last November and ran the scout team at season’s end. The 6-foot-6 Michigan native was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2019.

Mathis’ clearance is more good news for the Georgia quarterback room, which was thin after starter Jake Fromm entered the NFL draft a year early. The Bulldogs added Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman earlier this spring, and on Thursday got a commitment from USC transfer J.T. Daniels.
