The Georgia Bulldogs may have found a replacement for quarterback Jake Fromm for the 2020 season by adding former Wake Forest starter Jamie Newman as a graduate transfer, multiple media outlets reported Friday.
Fromm announced on Wednesday he will skip his senior season and declared for the NFL draft.
Newman, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound dual-threat quarterback from Graham, N.C., started 16 games over his sophomore and junior seasons with the Demon Deacons, and will have one year of eligibility remaining.
In 2019 at 8-5 Wake Forest, Newman passed for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions, and completed 60.9 percent of his attempts. He also rushed for six scores, gaining 574 yards on 180 carries. He was ranked No. 2 in total offense in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 286.8-yard average.
In his Georgia career, Fromm appeared in 43 games — 42 of them as the starter — and posted a 35-7 career record. His 8,224 passing yards put him fourth in school history, and his 78 career touchdown passes rank second all-time for the Bulldogs. He has a career completion percentage of 63.2 percent (621 of 982).
Before adding Newman, the Bulldogs looked unsettled at the QB position with only three scholarship players left at the position: former walk-on Stetson Bennett, who appeared in five games in 2019; redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, who will go through spring drills after emergency brain surgery last May; and Carson Beck, a four-star freshman from Florida ranked as the No. 8 pro-style QB in the nation by the 247Sports composite.
