LSU will begins its national championship defense on Saturday with Myles Brennan at quarterback.
Coach Ed Orgeron said Monday that Brennan will be the one to take over for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who was the No. 1 pick of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Tigers open the delayed season at home against Mississippi State.
Orgeron said he is confident in Brennan, a redshirt junior, even though he isn’t battle-tested.
“I’ve always believed in Myles Brennan,” Orgeron told reporters Monday. “I think he’s an excellent young man, he’s waited his turn, a lot of respect, has a strong arm — probably a stronger arm than Joe Burrow had — can extend plays with his feet, not quite like Joe did. He’s learning the offense.”
He continued: “The only thing that we don’t know, and I do believe that he’s gonna do very well, is how he’s going to do in the fire. And the only way to know that is put them into fire. I trust Myles. He’s become a team leader. His short passing game is a strength. The deep ball is something that he is very good at. I think that takes time for him and his receivers to get the timing down, and hopefully improve on that throughout the year.”
Brennan, 21, came to LSU as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2017, ranked as the nation’s No. 6 pro-style quarterback by the 247Sports composite.
The 6-foot-4 Mississippi native has appeared in 17 games for the Tigers, completing 42 of 70 passes for 600 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
