LSU’s Ed Orgeron was named Home Depot college football coach of the year on Wednesday, three days after the Tigers were named the No. 1 team in the 2019 College Football Playoff.
Passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Joe Brady won the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Brady joined the Tigers in January after spending two seasons helping with the offense with the New Orleans Saints. Known as a spread-offense guru, Brady worked this offseason with coordinator Steve Ensminger to revolutionize what had been LSU’s staid ground-based attack.
The Tigers are 13-0 entering the postseason. Orgeron is 38-9 in his third full season as head coach of the Tigers, with a 23-7 record in the SEC. This season, the Tigers knocked off five teams ranked in the top 10 at the time LSU played them.
Orgeron guided LSU to a perfect record in the regular season, then beat Georgia in the SEC title game.
Quarterback Joe Burrow is the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and in discussion to be one of the top players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Orgeron was also named SEC Coach of the Year and Burrow was announced as the conference’s top offensive player.
