Mississippi State junior Keytaon Thompson, who entered the transfer portal after losing a camp quarterback competition, has returned to the team and is listed as the second-stringer this week.

Thompson had been away from the team since the day after coach Joe Moorhead selected Penn State graduate transfer Tommy Stevens as the starting quarterback on Aug. 22.

Moorhead said at a press conference Monday that he had talked with Thompson and both sides “decided it was in his best interests as a player and for us as a team for him to return.”

Thompson attended a team meeting Sunday, Moorhead said.

The Bulldogs opened with a 38-28 victory against Louisiana in New Orleans as Stevens completed 20 of 30 passes for 236 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Thompson backed up Nick Fitzgerald for the past two seasons. He has completed 50 of 105 passes for 846 yards, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has rushed for 672 yards and 10 touchdowns on 99 carries.
