There are two reasons that you might have heard about Flowery Branch, Ga.

First, it has that catchy name. Second, it is the home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

You now can add a third reason – Connor Shaw.

The junior quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks had a day to remember in the team’s dominating win over Missouri, which was playing its first league road game as a member of the Southeastern Conference.

Shaw, a Flowery Branch native who had missed most of the two previous games with a hairline fracture in his throwing shoulder, misfired on his first pass attempt.

“He got off to a slow start,” Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said with a smile. “He missed his first one.”

It didn’t happen again.

Shaw connected on 20 consecutive passes to finish 20 of 21 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Gamecocks to a 31-10 win. His 95.2 percent completion rate is the highest this season among Football Bowl Subdivision signal-callers. He added 41 rushing yards and had a 226.27 passing efficiency rating. His 20 consecutive completions tied for second all-time in SEC history.

For his efforts, Shaw has been named the NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week.

Throughout the 2012 season, the top passing performance in college football each week will be honored with this recognition from the National Rifle Association and Lindy’s Sports. At the end of the season, the NRA/Lindy’s National Gunslinger of the Year will be named.
