Alcohol will be sold at Vanderbilt home football games this season, the university announced Wednesday.

The sale of domestic and imported beers will take place in public areas of Vanderbilt Stadium starting with the Commodores’ season opener against Georgia on Aug. 31. Beer sales (limiting two at one time to each customer) will stop at the end of the third quarter.

In a Vanderbilt release, athletic director Malcolm Turner said, “Not only will this game day initiative enhance our fan experience, it will provide additional resources to invest in our mission of helping our student-athletes succeed on and off the field, such as through facility enhancements and in other areas.”

The release also said some revenue will be utilized to support prevention and education programming on campus related to alcohol use.

The university also indicated expanded alcohol sales at other Commodores’ athletic events is a matter that will be determined in the future.

Vanderbilt becomes the fifth school in the SEC to sell alcohol after the league lifted its ban on public areas with a policy change announcement adopted May 31. Arkansas, LSU, Missouri and Texas A&M have already decided to do so, and Tennessee is considering it while developing its policy.

Turner, who became athletic director on Feb. 1, has already been starting to make small upgrades, including a new video board and the renovation of restrooms in the football stadium.
