Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason was scheduled to have a second interview for Vanderbilt’s head coaching job Friday morning and the school is expected to make a hiring decision later in the day, according to CBS Sports.

The interview is considered a formality and Mason will be named the Commodores’ new coach, 247 Sports reported.

Vanderbilt interviewed Indianapolis Colts’ offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton earlier in the week but he has since withdrawn his name from consideration. The school also considered Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris.

The job opened when James Franklin left to take over as Penn State’s head coach.

Offensive line coach Herb Hand interviewed for the Vanderbilt job. He may remain a part of the new coaching staff or follow Franklin to Penn State.

Vanderbilt, a program on the rise, is 16-4 over its last 20 games.
