Vanderbilt is set to hire Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea as head coach, Yahoo Sports reported Monday.

The deal with Lea, a 38-year-old Nashville native, is likely to be official by Tuesday, per the report.

Lea was a coveted candidate who interviewed to become head coach at Boston College in 2019.

Notre Dame, 10-0 entering Saturday’s ACC title game with Clemson, is currently in the mix for a spot in the College Football Playoff. A nominee for the Broyles Award (assistant coach of the year), Lea’s defense is ranked 12th in the country in scoring defense at 17.1 points per game.

Vanderbilt fired Derek Mason last month after seven seasons, which included an 0-8 mark in an all-SEC schedule in 2020. The Commodores (0-9) finish the season at Georgia (7-2) on Saturday.

Mason was 27-55 as Vanderbilt head coach.
