Carolina Panthers left tackle Matt Kalil will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee after consulting with Dr. James Andrews, the team announced Tuesday.
“Matt Kalil traveled to Florida on Monday to receive a second opinion on his right knee from Dr. James Andrews,” Panthers trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement. “After consulting with Dr. Andrews, the decision was made to perform an arthroscopic procedure on Matt’s knee. He will be evaluated on a weekly basis.”
Kalil had been dealing with a sore knee that kept him out of practice. With the 29-year-old Kalil sidelined, Taylor Moton moved from right to left tackle and Jeremiah Sirles stepped in at right tackle.
Carolina’s offensive line has been ravaged by injury this offseason, as starting right tackle Daryl Williams sustained a dislocated kneecap and an MCL sprain and left guard Amini Silatolu is in need for surgery on a torn meniscus.
Coach Ron Rivera said rehab is going well for both guys but that there’s not yet a timetable for their return.
“Absolutely concerned,” Rivera said. “You’ve got three potential starters right now that are missing time. It’s going to be tough. But as coaches, we have to continue to do the best job we can to make sure everybody gets prepared.”
Matt Kalil signed a five-year, $55.5 million contract in March 2017 to play on the same offensive line as his brother, Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil.
