LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White is headed back to where he spent 2015 — injured reserve.

White suffered a fractured left fibula and a high ankle sprain on a 1-yard reception against the Detroit Lions in Sunday’s 17-14 victory at Soldier Field.

Bears coach John Fox said Wednesday the second-year player will be placed on IR.

White, leading the Bears in receptions with 19 and third in receiving yards (187) after four games, spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his left leg to repair a stress fracture in his shin. That injury also kept him from participating in training camp.

“This injury is not nearly as serious as the last one,” Fox said. “This is a completely different injury, it’s a completely different bone in the lower leg. This is the fibula. It’s a non-weight-bearing bone.”

The 24-year-old White had trouble initially adapting to a pro offense but seemed to be getting a firmer grasp. Fox called Sunday’s six-reception game White’s best.

“He kind of cut loose and played rather than thinking,” Fox said.

The Bears have not ruled out the possibility that White will undergo surgery. Fox said it is possible White could return later in the season. He will be eligible to return in eight weeks.
