The New Orleans Saints are hoping to have star receiver Michael Thomas back on the field for their Week 4 game against the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Thomas, 27, has been ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers due to a high ankle sprain. It will be the second straight game that Thomas will miss.

He reportedly was moving well during workouts on Friday and is hopeful he can play against the Lions.

Thomas injured the left ankle late in the Saints’ opening-game win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 13 and has not been available to practice since.

The club decided against placing Thomas on injured reserve, a move which would have required him to miss three games.

The Saints have missed Thomas, who led the NFL in both receptions (single-season-record 149 catches) and receiving yards (1,725) in 2019.

He caught only three passes for 17 yards in Week 1. The three receptions tied his career low for a single game, with the 17 yards his second-lowest single-game mark.

Thomas, a two-time All-Pro selection and the league’s 2019 offensive player of the year, has racked up 1,000 or more receiving yards in all four prior seasons since being drafted in the second round in 2016 out of Ohio State.
