The Arizona Diamondbacks were forced to make more injury-related moves on Wednesday, placing right-handed pitcher Taylor Widener (right groin strain) and outfielder Kole Calhoun (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list.

The team recalled catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho and right-handed pitcher Riley Smith from its alternate training site, and Smith is scheduled to take Widener’s rotation spot Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres.

Calhoun, whose surgery on his right meniscus caused him to miss the start of the season, was hurt during Tuesday’s win over San Diego. He carries a .292/.333/.479 line with two home runs in 51 plate appearances.

Widener (1-1) has a 2.82 ERA through 22 1/3 innings this season.

Arizona will have another opportunity to watch Varsho, 24, who, at Double-A Jackson in 2019, slashed .301/.378/.520 with 18 home runs to complement 21 stolen bases.

Prior to this season, Baseball America listed him as the big leagues’ No. 67 prospect.

In 37 games with the Diamondbacks in 2020, Varsho produced a .188/.287/.366 line with three home runs and nine RBIs.
