NEW YORK — Home plate umpire Jeff Nelson exited Game 3 of the American League Championship series on Tuesday after the bottom of the fourth inning.

Nelson was hit in the mask by a Luis Severino pitch that was tipped in the top of the fourth. He initially stayed in the game after being checked out by Yankees trainer Steve Donahue, but after DJ LeMahieu ended the bottom half, Nelson exited.

Kerwin Danley replaced Nelson by moving from second base. Mark Carlson moved from third base to second base, while Marvin Hudson switched from left field to third. The rest of the game was played without a left field umpire.
