Second baseman Cesar Hernandez was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, according to multiple reports.
The White Sox had pursued several players to fill a void at second base. USA Today reported the White Sox had discussions with the Colorado Rockies about acquiring shortstop Trevor Story, with the intention of moving the All-Star to second base. They also talked with the Arizona Diamondbacks about infielder Eduardo Escobar, who was acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
Hernandez, who won the Gold Glove at second base in 2020, is batting .231 with a career-high 18 home runs and 47 RBIs this season and adds another powerful bat to the potent Chicago offense.
The switch-hitting Hernandez had his sixth multi-hit game in July on Wednesday, including a home run against the St. Louis Cardinals, and hit safely in 16 of his 21 games this month.
To get Hernandez, the White Sox are parting with Double-A left-hander Konnor Pilkington.
The Indians entered Thursday 8 1/2 games out of first place in the AL Central and face the first-place White Sox in a three-game series beginning Friday.
