Spring Roundup: Braves rough up Orioles

The Atlanta Braves roughed up Baltimore Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez in the first inning and posted an 11-4 victory on Wednesday in an exhibition game in Sarasota, Fla. Jimenez gave up six runs, three hits and three walks while retiring only one batter and Atlanta rookie Mallex Smith had four extra-base hits, including two triples in the first inning and a home run in the fifth. Designated hitter Chris Davis homered in a four-run second for the Orioles against Atlanta’s Aaron Blair.

Twins 7, Red Sox 4

Jorge Polanco belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Minnesota downed Boston in the exhibition opener for both teams in Fort Myers, Fla. Phil Hughes pitched two scoreless innings and Trevor May was the winning pitcher after throwing two scoreless innings for the Twins. South Korean Byung Ho Park struck out three times in his debut

Blue Jays 4, Phillies 4

Toronto’s Ryan Goins hit a two-run triple in a three-run fourth inning of a game that finished in a nine-inning tie in Dunedin, Fla. Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey worked two innings and gave up a run.

Yankees 10, Tigers (ss) 9

New York overcame a seven-run deficit with DH Dustin Ackley going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, leading a 13-hit parade in a win over Detroit in Tampa, Fla.. Bryan Holaday wet 2-for-3 with a grand slam in the Tigers’ split-squad loss.

Tigers (ss) 10, Pirates 3

Detroit scored four runs in the first inning and added on to beat Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla. DH Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits and two RBIs, including a solo homer. Tigers right-hander Buck Farmer got the win, pitching two innings while giving up one run. Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh stepped in as the Tigers first base coach in the game.

Nationals 6, Rays 2

Washington won in manager Dusty Baker’s debut with the team in Port Charlotte, Fla., but Grady Sizemore was the catalyst, hitting a three-run sixth-inning homer off Tampa Bay prospect Blake Snell. Desmond Jennings had two RBIs for the Rays.

Rangers 6, Royals 2

Texas rolled over World Series champion Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz., thanks to big production in the seventh and ninth innings. Nomar Mazara hit a three-run homer in the ninth and had four RBIs for the Rangers.

Giants 4, Angels 1

Trevor Brown had two hits, and Ryan Lollis, Grant Green, Conor Gillaspie and Christian Arroyo all had RBIs as San Francisco beat the Los Angeles Angels in Scottsdale, Ariz. Jeff Samardzija walked two and struck out none in two innings in his Giants debut.

Mariners 7, Padres 0

Chris Iannetta, Franklin Gutierrez and Stefen Romero all homered as Seattle pounded San Diego in Peoria, Ariz. Iannetta added a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the day. Hunter Renfroe had two hits for the Padres.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3

Jean Segura had three hits and Kyle Jensen had two RBIs to lead Arizona over Colorado in Scottsdale, Ariz. Raimel Tapia had two hits and Nolan Arenado doubled in a run for the Rockies. Archie Bradley pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two and walking one, for the win.

Cardinals 13, Florida Atlantic University 6

Jacob Wilson had a homer and five RBIs and Patrick Wisdom had a home run and four RBIs to lead St. Louis over Florida Atlantic in Jupiter, Fla. Austin Gomber and Deck McGuire pitched a combined four perfect innings with seven strikeouts for the Cardinals.

Brewers 11, University of Milwaukee 2

Will Middlebrooks had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to lead Milwaukee over the University of Milwaukee in Phoenix. Nine Brewers pitchers combined to allow just two runs to the Panthers, both by Hiram Burgos.

Indians 4, Reds 4

Newly signed free agent Mike Napoli singled twice and scored in his first game with Cleveland in a nine-inning tie. Eugenio Suarez recorded his third double in two games for Cincinnati.
