After a rough outing in his season debut, the Boston Red Sox designated right-hander Ryan Weber for assignment on Monday and recalled utility man Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester.
Boston also added right-hander Yacksel Rios in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash. Rios had been designated for assignment by the Mariners this past weekend.
Weber came on in the second inning Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays to spell a struggling Martin Perez but fared even worse. While Perez gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings to open the game, Weber followed by giving up 11 runs on 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings of an eventual 18-4 defeat.
Weber, 30, has a 5.30 ERA in 60 appearances (16 starts) over the past seven seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2015-16), Seattle Mariners (2017), Tampa Bay Rays (2018) and Red Sox. He was 3-7 in 36 appearances (eight starts) for Boston over the past three seasons with a 5.54 ERA.
Chavis, 25, batted .273 with one home run and two RBIs in 11 games with the Red Sox earlier this season. He was batting .263 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 19 games with Worcester.
In parts of three major league seasons, all with the Red Sox, Chavis is batting .243 with 24 home runs and 79 RBIs in 148 games.
Rios, 27, gave up three earned runs in three outings with the Mariners this season. He is 5-2 lifetime with a 6.47 ERA in 69 relief appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies (2017-19), Pittsburgh Pirates (2019-20) and Mariners.
