Boston Red Sox All-Star closer Matt Barnes was placed on the injured list Tuesday after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team was waiting on results of a PCR test conducted Tuesday to learn whether Barnes is positive for COVID-19. He said Barnes, who is vaccinated, remained at the team hotel in Detroit.

Cora said the entire team was tested Tuesday and that one other player had symptoms. He said the unidentified player tested negative.

“(Barnes is) going to go through the whole testing stuff and hopefully everything goes well,” Cora said prior to Tuesday’s game against the Tigers. “As a group, we got tested today. So far, everything has turned out to be negative, which is positive.

“So we just have to wait for his. (The result is) probably going to be later on tonight or early (Wednesday) morning.”

The 31-year-old Barnes tested positive for COVID-19 in both March and July. He was cleared to return to the team in 48 hours on both occasions.

Barnes is 5-2 with 23 saves and a 2.30 ERA in 43 appearances this season, his top campaign of his eight big league seasons.
