The Boston Red Sox placed left fielder Andrew Benintendi on the 10-day injured list with a strained right rib cage and recalled right-hander Ryan Weber from the team’s alternate training site.

Benintendi was injured in the Red Sox’s 8-2 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

“We had X-rays last night,” Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke told reporters Wednesday. “There’s nothing broken, but he’s going to get some more evaluations today on how he’s doing. So he’s on the IL.”

It has been a rough start to the shortened season for Benintendi, who is batting .103 after 14 games with no home runs and one RBI. J.D. Martinez, who has played one game in the outfield this season, could get some time in left, Roenicke said.

The 26-year-old Benintendi is a career .273 hitter with 51 home runs and 260 RBIs over 485 career games, all with the Red Sox.

Weber started the season as the Red Sox’s No. 3 starter but was optioned Sunday after he opened the season 0-2 with a 9.90 ERA over three outings.
