The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Jharel Cotton from the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for a reported $100,000 in cash considerations.

Cotton was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Cotton missed the 2018 season because of Tommy John surgery and didn’t pitch in the majors last season after returning to the mound in May. He made four appearances for Class A-Stockton before being sidelined by a hamstring injury, and he later returned to go 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in 14 appearances (one start) for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Cotton made 29 starts for Oakland over two seasons (2016-17) and went 11-10 with a 4.95 ERA. He was a rotation member for the Athletics in 2017 when he went 9-10 with a 5.58 ERA in 24 starts.

Oakland acquired Cotton in the July 2016 five-player deal at the trade deadline that sent outfielder Josh Reddick and left-hander Rich Hill to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
