The Chicago Cubs activated outfielder Ian Happ off the 10-day injury prior to Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.
Happ was penciled into the No. 6 spot in the batting order and will play center field.
Happ had been sidelined since bruising ribs in a collision with teammate Nico Hoerner on May 2. Both players were attempting to catch a pop-up in the outfield when they smacked into one another.
Hoerner went on the injured list with a forearm injury and was activated Friday.
The 26-year-old Happ is off to a slow start and was batting .167 with two homers and four RBIs in 26 games before the injury. The former first-round pick (ninth overall in 2015) batted .258 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs in 57 games for Chicago last season.
To open a roster spot for Happ, infielder Ildemaro Vargas was designated for assignment. Vargas, 29, hit .143 with two RBIs in nine games.
