Chicago Cubs All-Star Kris Bryant wasn’t in the starting lineup Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, one night after leaving a contest with right hamstring soreness.

The Cubs are terming Bryant’s injury as “hamstring fatigue” and manager David Ross said he couldn’t risk further injury.

“He rolls over a groundball in the hole and he’s trying to stretch it out and something bad happens at first base,” Ross said of what might happen if Bryant played. “That’s me being irresponsible as a manager.”

Bryant, who was playing left field, departed Tuesday’s 7-6 win over the Cardinals before the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ross didn’t rule out the possibility of Bryant being used off the bench on Wednesday.

Bryant, a four-time All-Star, is batting .264 with 16 homers and 48 RBIs in 86 games.

Bryant has been frequently mentioned as a possible trade target for teams with the July 30 deadline approaching.
