MLB Spring Recaps: Braves, Pirates get wins

Scoring all its runs in the bottom of the third inning, The Pittsburgh Pirates notched a 4-3 spring training win over the Minnesota Twins split squad in Bradenton, Fla. Chris Stewart’s three-run double capped the rally, while Jordy Mercer added an RBI single. Daniel Palka cracked a two-run homer for the Twins and Travis Harrison contributed a solo shot in the ninth.

Tigers 4, Mets 3

Omar Infante’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth lifted Detroit to a win over New York in Lakeland, Fla. J.D Martinez added a solo homer for the Tigers, while L.J. Mazzilli knocked in runs for the Mets with a sacrifice fly and a double. Starter Michael Fulmer fanned four over 2 1/3 innings for Detroit, but allowed three hits and two runs.

Braves 10, Yankees 2

A six-run first inning enabled Atlanta to coast to a victory over New York in Tampa. Kurt Suzuki ripped a two-run double, while Matt Kemp and Nick Markakis added RBI singles as Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia didn’t survive the inning. Jaime Garcia tossed three hitless innings for the Braves. Austin Romine and Jorge Mateo homered for New York.

Orioles 8, Twins (ss) 6

Francisco Pena lashed a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning as Baltimore rallied to beat a Minnesota split squad in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Orioles got homers from Trey Mancini, Anthony Santander and Craig Gentry. Jorge Polanco cracked a grand slam for the Twins, who also got a solo homer from Byron Buxton.

Nationals 5, Astros 4

Andrew Stevenson’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Washington a win over Houston in West Palm Beach, Fla. Bryce Harper ripped his fifth homer of the spring for the Nationals, who also got the long ball from Adam Eaton and Drew Ward. A.J. Reed accounted for the Astros’ scoring with a grand slam in the seventh.

Rays 8, Blue Jays 2

Casey Gillaspie homered twice as Tampa Bay routed Toronto in Port Charlotte, Fla. Jake Bauers and Evan Longoria also belted homers for the Rays, while the Blue Jays’ only runs came on a two-run double in the fifth by Dwight Smith. Bauers finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Phillies 6, Red Sox 5

Tommy Joseph’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted Philadelphia past Boston in Clearwater, Fla. Roman Quinn homered for the Phillies, who tied the game in the eighth on the Red Sox’s third error of the day. Pablo Sandoval cracked a two-run shot for Boston off Aaron Nola, who fanned six in 3 1/3 innings.

Cardinals 9, Marlins 9

A four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth enabled Miami to salvage a tie with St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla. Paul DeJong’s belted a three-run homer in the seventh for the Cardinals, while Matt Adams also cracked a homer. Marcell Ozuna and Matt den Dekker homered for the Marlins.
