NEW YORK — Brett Gardner delivered the tiebreaking double with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New York Yankees overcame three home runs by Kansas City Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain in their 10-7 victory Tuesday night.

Ben Gamel began the winning rally when he reached on an error by shortstop Alcides Escobar, who could not handle the hop on the ground ball. Two pitches later, Gardner lined a 1-0 pitch from Kelvin Herrera (0-1) to center field and Escobar cut off the relay throw as Gamel slid in feet first while his helmet came off.

After Gardner’s hit, Herrera hit Starlin Castro with a pitch and the Yankees took a 10-7 lead when McCann hit a two-run double off the center-field wall.

The Yankees (13-18) won for the fourth time in five games and needed Gardner’s hit because Masahiro Tanaka and Andrew Miller (2-0) could not keep Cain in the ballpark.

Phillies 3, Braves 2

ATLANTA — Left-hander Adam Morgan allowed one run over seven innings and won for the first time in his hometown as Philadelphia beat Atlanta at Turner Field for their third straight victory.

Morgan, who grew up in the northwest Atlanta suburb of Marietta, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four. Morgan (1-0) had lost his three previous starts against the Braves.

It was the fifth straight loss for Atlanta, which dropped to 1-16 at home after its 11th consecutive setback at Turner Field.

Philadelphia’s last seven wins have been by one run, the first time that’s happened since 1942.

Red Sox 13, Athletics 5

BOSTON — Travis Shaw belted a three-run home run and had five RBIs to pace another offensive barrage for Boston in a blowout of Oakland at Fenway Park.

Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer and Mookie Betts added a solo blast for the Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts, Chris Young and Jackie Bradley Jr. all had an RBI while contributing to the team’s 16-hit attack. Bradley extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games.

Boston won for the sixth time in nine games and captured its fifth straight against Oakland (14-20).

Tigers 5, Nationals 4

WASHINGTON — Victor Martinez had four hits and drove in a run and Nick Castellanos had a two-run homer and reached base three times as Detroit beat Washington to even the three-game interleague series.

The Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak while Washington lost for the fifth time in six outings. The win overshadowed a two-homer game for Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman, whose solo shot with two outs in the seventh cut the margin to 5-4 off reliever Drew VerHagen.

Justin Wilson of the Tigers came on to retire Daniel Murphy for the last out of the seventh. Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth when slow-footed catcher Wilson Ramos was thrown out at the plate on an 8-6-2 relay, after a double by pinch-hitter Clint Robinson, for the final out of the frame. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his eighth save as he retired Murphy for the final out with two runners on base.

Brewers 10, Marlins 2

MIAMI — Leadoff man Jonathan Villar produced two hits, two steals, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead Milwaukee to a victory over Miami.

Aaron Hill also had a big game for Milwaukee, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Ryan Braun added two hits and two RBIs.

The Brewers beat Marlins left-hander Adam Conley (2-2), who held Milwaukee hitless for 7 2/3 innings in his previous start April 29 at Miller Park.
