Spring Scores: Zimmerman shuts down former team

Jordan Zimmerman faced his former team and retired eight of nine hitters in the Detroit Tigers’ 8-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday in Viera, Fla.

Zimmerman allowed a two-out hit to Pedro Severino in the third inning and was replaced by Bruce Rondon. Rondon gave up a two-run home run to Ben Revere.

Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals had five strikeouts but gave up a home run to Bryan Holaday. Holaday also homered off A.J. Cole and has three home runs and eight RBIs in spring games.

Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 2

Kenta Maeda pitched two scoreless innings in his debut for Los Angeles in Glendale, Ariz. Maeda threw 28 pitches while allowing one hit and getting a two strikeouts after signing a $25 million, eight-year contract in January. Shelby Miller allowed two runs and five hits in two innings for Arizona.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 4

Jacoby Ellsbury made his spring debut for New York in Tampa, Fla., and tripled while Alex Rodriguez had two hits. Prospects Jorge Mateo and Aaron Judge also homered for the Yankees. Brennan Boesch and Ryan LaMarre hit home runs for Boston, which didn’t play David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval.

Mets 3, Astros 1

Ken Giles made his debut for Houston and allowed two runs in the fifth inning of a loss to New York in Kissimmee, Fla. Giles gave up a run-scoring triple to Dilson Herrera and a sacrifice fly to Michael Conforto. Ruben Tejada was 0-for-2 with a walk in his first action since breaking his leg on Chase Utley’s hard slide in the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Blue Jays 9, Phillies 6

Michael Saunders homered twice and had five RBIs for Toronto in Dunedin, Fla. Troy Tulowitzki also homered for Toronto. Aaron Nola allowed four runs and four hits in two innings, while Taylor Featherson homered for Philadelphia.

Rangers 7, Giants 5

Cole Hamels allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings for Texas in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mitch Moreland drove in three runs for the Rangers. Ricky Romero allowed a hit in 1 2/3 innings for a split San Francisco squad.

Angels 9, Mariners 7

Daniel Nava had three hits and drove three runs for Los Angeles in Peoria Ariz. Robinson Cano and Franklin Gutierrez homered for Seattle, while Wade Miley pitched two scoreless innings. Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz was 0-for-2 in spring debut.

White Sox 7, Royals 6

Adam Eaton homered and had three hits while Avisail Garcia drove in two runs for Chicago in Surprise, Ariz. Ian Kennedy made his debut for the Royals and allowed one run and four hits in two innings. Eric Hosmer lifted two sacrifice flies and Alcides Escobar scored twice for Kansas City.

Indians 6, Giants 2

Corey Kluber pitched two perfect innings for Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz. Carlos Santana and Yan Gomes doubled for the Indians. Junior Arias had two hits and scored both runs for a split squad of Giants, while Brandon Crawford went 0-for-3.

Braves 9, Pirates 6

Nick Swisher hit one of three Atlanta home runs in Kissimmee, Fla. Tyler Flowers and Ryan Lavarnway also hit home runs for the Braves. Pedro Florimon drove in three runs, while prospect Tyler Glasnow allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh.

Reds 4, Cubs 2

Miguel Montero remained perfect at the plate with three hits and a home run in Chicago’s loss to Cincinnati in Mesa, Ariz. Montero added a single and a double and is 5-for-5 this spring. Brandon Finnegan struck out two in two scoreless innings, while Tucker Barnhart hit a two-run home run for the Reds.

Twins 13, Orioles 2

Brian Dozier led off the game with a home run and Minnesota had 16 hits in a rout of Baltimore in Fort Myers, Fla. Eddie Rosario and Juan Centano also homered for the Twins. Ryan Flaherty had two hits for Baltimore, but its split squad was charged with five errors.

Athletics 8, Brewers 8

Andy Wilkins and Alex Presley homered in the eighth inning as Milwaukee rallied for the tie in Mesa, Ariz. Yadiel Rivera also homered in the ninth as the Brewers came back from a five-run deficit. Rich Hill allowed five of eight hitters to reach in his spring debut for Oakland.

Cardinals 3, Marlins 2

Wei-Yin Chen made his debut in Miami’s loss in Jupiter, Fla., and pitched two scoreless innings despite allowing three hits. Marco Gonzales started for St. Louis and allowed two runs and four hits. Matt Holliday was a last-minute scratch for the Cardinals because of back tightness. He was in the Cardinals’ original starting lineup at first base.

Rockies 9, Padres 5

Tyler Chatwood allowed a run in two innings for Colorado during his first major league start since his second Tommy John surgery in Tempe, Ariz. Trevor Story, who could be the starting shortstop in place of Jose Reyes, was 0-for-2 with walk. Tyson Ross started for San Diego and pitched two scoreless innings.
