DENVER — Nolan Arenado led an extra-base barrage and had a career-high seven RBIs for the Colorado Rockies as they beat the San Francisco Giants 10-6 on Wednesday.

Arenado went 4-for-5 with two homers and finished a triple shy of the cycle while continuing to punish the Giants. Last season, Arenado hit 10 homers with 24 RBIs against them.

The Rockies unloaded a franchise-record tying 12 extra-base hits and subjected Giants starter Jake Peavy to most of that damage. He worked four innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits, including six doubles, three triples and a homer.

Carlos Gonzalez had three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Trevor Story had three hits, including two triples, and Charlie Blackmon had a double and a triple.

The 10 extra-base hits allowed by Peavy (0-1) were the most in the San Francisco era of the Giants’ franchise. Sam Jones in 1960 and Jack Sanford in 1961 each allowed eight extra-base hits.

Prior to Peavy, the last pitcher to allow 10 extra-base hits in a game was Boston’s Curt Schilling on Aug. 10, 2006 at Kansas City. Over the past 50 seasons, only Peavy, Schilling and Cleveland’s Luis Tiant on April 10, 1969 have allowed 10 extra-base hits in a game.

The 12 extra-base hits allowed are the most in the San Franciso era of the Giants’ franchise.

Rockies starter Jordan Lyles lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. He took a 6-2 lead into the fifth but gave up three runs.

Chris Rusin (1-0) relieved him and worked 2 1/3 hitless innings. Miguel Castro gave up a homer to Brandon Belt with two outs in the eighth to trim the Rockies lead to 7-6. They had gone ahead 7-5 in the sixth on a two-out single by Gonzalez following Story’s second triple, which gave the Rockies a franchise-record four triples.

Arenado drove in his first run with a ground out in the first. He hit a two-run homer in Colorado’s three-run third, doubled home a run in the fourth and hit a three-run shot in the eighth off left-hander Josh Osich to make it 10-6. Arenado entered the game hitting .222 with one double, two homers and five RBIs.

With three runs in the fifth, the Giants cut the Rockies’ lead to 6-5 and knocked out Lyles.

Trevor Brown, who doubled home a run, scored on Joe Panik’s sacrifice fly, and Denard Span, who had walked, took second when left fielder Gerardo Parra made an ill-advised throw home rather than to second base.

Hunter Pence hit a slow grounder just beyond the reach of second baseman DJ LeMahieu to score Span and end Lyles’ outing after 4 2/3 innings.

Story tripled off the top of the wall in center with one out in the first. He would have had a home run in past seasons, but that portion of the wall was raised nearly 9 feet over the winter and the ball hit the new fence.

After Arenado’s third homer of the season, doubles by Parra and Ben Paulsen netted another run in the third to give the Rockies a 5-2 lead.

The Giants had tied the game at 2 in the top of the third on Span’s two-run double. Lyles issued a leadoff walk and single, and Peavy sacrificed the runners into scoring position ahead of Span, who lashed a 3-1 pitch into the gap in right-center.

Two productive outs helped the Rockies take a 2-0 lead in the first. Blackmon led off with a triple to right-center when Pence lost the ball in the sun. Story followed with a sacrifice fly. Gonzalez tripled and scored as Arenado grounded out.
