Spring Scores: CC’s spring debut goes smoothly

CC Sabathia’s first outing of the spring went off without a hitch on Tuesday, but the New York Yankees fell 1-0 to the Miami Marlins in Jupiter, Fla.

The left-hander worked two scoreless and hitless innings, throwing just six pitches in the first inning. Sabathia only allowed a walk with two outs in the second inning. He was long gone from the game when the Marlins scored the winning run in the seventh as Don Kelly singled and came home on a two-out single by Chris Johnson.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 3

Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw gave up one run in three innings, Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks worked three scoreless innings and Trayce Thompson, brother of Golden State guard Klay Thompson, had a two-run triple for the Dodgers in Mesa, Ariz. Kris Bryant homered and had two hits for the Cubs.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 1

Brock Holt hit a first-inning home run against Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez to propel Boston in Sarasota, Fla. The Orioles fell to 0-8-1 in exhibition play, scoring their lone run on a triple by J.J. Hardy and an infield out by Joey Richard.

Tigers 6, Rays 5

Hot-hitting Victor Martinez raised his spring average to .412 after going 2 for 2 with a double and John Mayberry Jr. smacked a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning for Detroit against Tampa Bay in Lakeland, Fla. Ian Kinsler added a double for the Tigers and Kyle Roller homered for the Rays.

Cardinals 5, Twins 3

Aledmys Diaz had four hits and two RBIs and Michael Wacha allowed one run in two innings in his first spring start for St. Louis against a Minnesota split squad in Fort Myers, Fla. Anthony Garcia hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Cardinals.

Braves 5, Mets 4

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Emilio Bonifacio hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the ninth inning to lift Atlanta past New York. Mets starter Matt Harvey, in his first spring outing, pitched three innings and gave up one run.

Nationals 4, Astros 2

Max Scherzer survived a 37-pitch first inning, giving up one run in three innings against Houston in Kissimmee, Fla. Houston starter Doug Fister allowed one run and two hits in three innings and pinch-hitter Derek Fisher homered for the Astros.

Phillies 4, Pirates 2

Darin Ruf’s two-run homer in the first inning off left-hander Jonathon Niese propelled Philadelphia over Pittsburgh in Clearwater, Fla.

Blue Jays 9, Twins 3

Darrell Ceciliani hit a grand slam in the first inning and Gavin Floyd pitched three innings to help Toronto beat a Minnesota split squad in Dunedin, Fla. David Adams homered and Justin Smoak had an RBI double in the fifth for the Blue Jays and Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the Twins.

Indians 4, Mariners 3

Mike Napoli and Jose Ramirez each had two hits and an RBI to lead Cleveland past Seattle in Goodyear, Ariz. Juan Uribe added a double and Francisco Lindor had a sacrifice fly for the Indians, who got three innings of one-run, one-hit pitching from Trevor Bauer.

Royals 3, Rockies 2

After a swarm of bees interrupted the game in Surprise, Ariz., Kansas City stung Colorado with long balls. Edinson Volquez pitched three hitless innings, Bubba Starling hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning and Paulo Orlando homered for the Royals.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 8

Jean Segura had a two-run double among his three hits and Peter O’Brien blasted a two-run homer in a six-run second inning against an Arizona split squad in a game that ended in a nine-inning tie in Peoria, Ariz. Austin Hedges had two homers and five RBIs for the Padres and Jake Lamb added a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks.

Rangers 10, A’s 3

Delino DeShields sparked the Texas offense with two hits and two RBIs against Oakland in Mesa, Ariz. Elvis Andrus and Michael McKenry contributed two hits each for the Rangers and Texas starter Derek Holland allowed two unearned runs in three innings.
