Spring Scores: Yanks’ Nova struggles, Grichuck shines

Ivan Nova, who is competing with CC Sabathia for the final spot in the New York Yankees’ rotation, allowed six runs on five hits, including three homers, in 4 2/3 innings in the Yankees’ 11-10 loss in 10 innings to the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota, Fla., on Friday.
Baltimore hit five home runs in all. Mark Trumbo hit his fifth home run of the spring, and Caleb Joseph, J.J. Hardy, Manny Machado and Nolan Reimold also homered.

Baltimore’s Chris Tillman struggled as well, allowing five runs on six hits in four innings.

Chris Denorfia hit a three-run homer for the Yankees.

Astros 1, Braves 1 (7 innings)

Dan Straily pitched four no-hit innings for Houston, and Braves starter Julio Teheran pitched six shutout innings in a game in Kissimmee, Fla., that was halted in the middle of the seventh inning because of rain.

Twins 6, Rays 1
Minnesota’s Opening Day starter, Ervin Santana, pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits while strikeout out eight in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Trevor Plouffe and Kurt Suzuki each homered twice for the Twins.
Rays starter Drew Smyly gave up five runs on five hits in his six innings of work. Three of the hits off Smyly were homers.

Mets 5, Cardinals 5

Randal Grichuk of the Cardinals homered off Mets closer Jeurys Familia during three-run, ninth-inning rally in a game in Port St. Lucie, Fla., that was halted after nine innings with the score tied.

Cardinals starter Michael Wacha, who struggled in his first three spring outings, allowed two runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Braves-Tigers canceled

Inclement weather forced the game between the Braves’ and Tigers’ split squads in Kissimmee, Fla., to be canceled.
