The Houston Astros activated designated hitter Yordan Alvarez from the COVID-19 injured list prior to Friday’s game against the host Tampa Bay Rays.

Alvarez had been placed on the list Wednesday for the second time this season, this time missing two games. He is batting .309 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 18 games this season.

“It’s great having him back in the heart of the lineup,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said prior to Friday’s contest. “It changes your lineup, especially in times when (the opponent) brings in a guy to face three batters at a time. It’s a totally different ballgame handling your bullpen now than how it used to be.”

Alvarez, 23, was previously placed on the COVID-19 injured list on April 14 and missed four games before making his return to the lineup on April 20.

Houston also activated right-hander Andre Scrubb (shoulder) from the injured list and optioned right-hander Peter Solomon and 1B/OF Taylor Jones to the alternate training site. Jones was added to the taxi squad.
