The Kansas City Royals designated veteran right-hander Wily Peralta for assignment on Saturday, one day after he clashed with rookie catcher Meibrys Viloria during the eighth inning of a game.

Right-hander Josh Staumont was recalled prior to Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Indians to fill the roster opening.

The 30-year-old Peralta gave up three runs in one inning of work on Friday night when he and Viloria couldn’t get together on the signs.

Peralta repeatedly stepped off the mound and Viloria made two visits to the mound. The crowd in Cleveland booed over the delays, and Royals manager Ned Yost was visibly upset in the dugout.

After a play at the plate later in the inning, Peralta, who was backing up home plate, yelled at Viloria, 22, on his way back to the mound.

Peralta said after the contest that there was a mix-up over the signs being changed.

“We had a hard time getting on the same page with the signs,” Peralta told reporters after the game. “I didn’t want to cross him up. We were just not on the same page. He’s a young catcher just trying to do a good job.”

Viloria said he didn’t understand why Peralta was so mad.

“He told me when I came out the second time that he doesn’t see the signs, so he told me to slow down,” Viloria said.

It was the second straight appearance in which Peralta allowed three runs, the other being Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox when he recorded just two outs.

The Royals traded veteran catcher Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs earlier this week. Friday marked Viloria’s second start on the season. He appeared in 10 games with the Royals in 2018.

Peralta, who won 17 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014, was 2-4 with a 5.80 ERA in 42 relief appearances this season. He is 50-56 with a 4.52 ERA in 211 appearances (120 starts) with the Brewers (2012-17) and Royals (2018-19).

The 25-year-old Staumont was 1-5 with a 3.16 ERA in 32 appearances (12 starts) at Triple-A Omaha.
