The Milwaukee Brewers announced Wednesday that they have signed former batting champion Dee Strange-Gordon to a minor league contract.
Strange-Gordon, a two-time All-Star, was released by the Cincinnati Reds late last month. He was assigned to Milwaukee’s alternate training site in Appleton, Wis.
Strange-Gordon, who turns 33 on Thursday, has primarily been a second baseman in his career but also can play the outfield and shortstop.
“I think we’ve been on the lookout for additional position player depth in general,” Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters. “… Dee is someone we talked about in the offseason and watched in spring training.”
Strange-Gordon batted .281 with four stolen bases in 12 spring games.
Strange-Gordon batted .333 to win the 2015 batting title with the Miami Marlins. He was an All-Star that season and also led the majors with 205 hits and 58 steals.
He stole a career-best 64 bases — which also led the majors — and led the NL with 12 triples in 2014 when he also made the All-Star Game as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Strange-Gordon also led the majors in steals with 60 in 2017. He leads all active players with 333 steals.
After playing four seasons with the Dodgers and three with the Marlins, Strange-Gordon spent the past three campaigns with the Seattle Mariners. He batted .200 with no homers, three RBIs and three steals in 33 games last season.
Overall, Strange-Gordon has a .286 average with 18 homers and 234 RBIs in 1,002 career games.
