Minnesota Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco underwent right ankle surgery for the second consecutive offseason.

Polanco had a procedure last week to remove a small bone chip and mild bone spur on the outside of his ankle, the team announced Monday. He will begin physical therapy next week in order to be ready for spring training.

“Jorge would never complain,” Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said on Oct. 1 in the club’s season-ending press briefing. “He went out and played every day, but his ankle was definitely something he was playing through, that was pretty clear.”

Polanco, who had a similar operation last offseason, played 55 of 60 games in 2020 but had just three RBIs in September. The 27-year-old finished the regular season batting .258 with four home runs and 19 RBIs before going 1-for-7 in two playoff games.

In 2019, Polanco earned his first career All-Star selection, and he ended the year batting .295 with career highs in home runs (22) and RBIs (79).
