The New York Yankees activated left-hander CC Sabathia from the 10-day injured list on Sunday, in time for a start against the Cleveland Indians in their series finale.

Sabathia (5-6, 4.78 ERA) had been on the injured list for 21 games due to right knee inflammation. Sabathia was cleared to return after successfully throwing a bullpen session on Tuesday. He is making his first start since July 27 in Boston, when he allowed five runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Sabathia was 0-2 with an 8.79 ERA in his three starts before beginning a second injured list stint. He also missed nine games with the same injury earlier this season.

Sabathia, 39, is 4-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 career starts against the Indians, who drafted him in the first round in 1998.

A six-time All-Star and the 2007 American League Cy Young Award winner, Sabathia is 251-159 with a 3.73 ERA and 3,068 strikeouts in 555 career starts.

The Yankees optioned righthander Ryan Dull to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday night in a corresponding move. The team also placed infielder Thairo Estrada (hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list and recalled Tyler Wade, who plays second base, shortstop and outfielder, from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees lost the series opener with the Indians in a 19-5 blowout, but won the next two games.
