The Pittsburgh Pirates are parting ways with catcher Francisco Cervelli.

The team requested unconditional release waivers Thursday for the 33-year-old veteran, who has been sidelined since sustaining a concussion in May.

According to a statement from Pirates general manager Neal Huntington, Cervelli requested his release to pursue another opportunity with more playing time.

“We appreciate who Francisco is and all he has done for the Pirates and the city of Pittsburgh,” Huntington said. “We believe this was the right move for the right reasons and wish Francisco well.”

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Cervelli has an offer pending with the Atlanta Braves.

Cervelli batted .193 with one homer and five RBIs in 34 games this season, his fifth with Pittsburgh. He is a lifetime .269 hitter with 36 home runs and 261 RBIs in 700 games with the New York Yankees (2008-14) and Pirates (2015-19).

Cervelli is in the final year of a three-year, $31 million contract with Pittsburgh that pays him a base salary of $11.5 million this season.
