The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander Chris Archer on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to shoulder inflammation in his pitching arm.

Archer was injured during Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals. He worked the first inning and called trainers out while throwing his warmup pitches in the second, and soon exited the game.

Archer, 30, is struggling this season with a 3-9 record and a career-worst 5.19 ERA in 23 starts. The two-time All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays has served up 25 homers during his first full season with the Pirates.

Pittsburgh also placed reliever Clay Holmes (quadriceps) on the injured list and recalled fellow right-handers Dario Agrazal and Parker Markel from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Holmes, 26, is 1-1 with a 6.05 ERA in 26 relief appearances for the Pirates.

The 24-year-old Agrazal is 2-3 with a 4.29 ERA in eight starts for Pittsburgh, and 5-5 with a 4.45 ERA in 16 minor league starts between the Double-A and Triple-A levels.

Markel, 28, has a 3.00 ERA in two relief appearances for the Pirates and had a 15.43 ERA in five appearances for the Seattle Mariners earlier this season. He has yet to give up a run or hit in six innings over four appearances at Indianapolis.
