The disappointing season for Carl Edwards Jr. continued Tuesday, as the struggling reliever was placed on the 10-day injured list by the San Diego Padres due to a strained right shoulder.

Edwards, who turns 28 next month, has endured the worst of his five seasons in the majors, going 1-1 with an 8.47 ERA with the Padres and Chicago Cubs in 22 appearances.

The right-hander was demoted to the minors by the Cubs earlier this season. Edwards is now starting his second stint on the IL in 2019, having also missing over a month from mid-June to late July with a left thoracic strain.

Although Edwards fashioned a combined 3.06 ERA in his first four seasons in the majors from 2015-18, Chicago traded the 6-foot-3 reliever to San Diego for left-hander Brad Wieck on July 31.

To take Edwards’ roster spot, the Padres called up southpaw Robbie Erlin from Triple-A El Paso. Erlin, 28, was 0-1 with a 4.87 ERA in 29 outings for San Diego this season, all but one of which came in relief.

Erlin did not pitch well for El Paso after a July 31 demotion, allowing nine runs on 11 hits in three innings during three appearances. In four minor league stints this year, Erlin went 0-1 with one save and an 8.10 ERA in 10 appearances.
