The San Francisco Giants designated veteran right-hander Jeff Samardzija for assignment and placed him on unconditional release waivers, the team said Saturday.

Samardzija, 35, pitched in just four games for the Giants this season, finishing 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA. His final game came Friday, when he gave up three runs in three innings in a 6-5 loss to the San Diego Padres.

On the season, he threw just 16 2/3 innings and struck out six, limited by a right shoulder injury.

He signed a five-year, $90 million deal that expires at the end of this season.

After the game Friday, Samardzija sounded as if he knew he wouldn’t be back in 2021.

“Sitting there was definitely a little emotional,” Samardzija said. “You take for granted all those times before you’ve done it. It’s like you’re always going to be there, always going to have an opportunity. But I think we all know that time goes by real fast.”

For his career, Samardzija has record of 80-106 and a 4.15 ERA in 364 games (241 starts). He has pitched for the Chicago Cubs (2008-14), Oakland Athletics (2014), Chicago White Sox (2015) and Giants.
