Seattle Mariners left-handed pitcher Hector Santiago received an 80-game suspension without pay from Major League Baseball on Thursday due to a violation of baseball’s performance-enhancing substance policy.

Santiago tested positive for exogenous Testosterone, MLB said in a statement.

Santiago is notable for being the first, and so far only, pitcher to be suspended under MLB’s new policy regarding doctoring balls with sticky substances.

Santiago was suspended for 10 games in June, and the decision was upheld after appeal in July.

Santiago, 33, was in the midst of his first season with the Mariners, his fifth major league club. In 13 appearances (one start), Santiago had a 1-1 record and 3.42 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings.

In 10 seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2011-13, 2018, 2019), Los Angeles Angels (2014-16), Minnesota Twins (2016-17) and New York Mets (2019), Santiago has a career ERA of 4.12 and a 48-51 record across 270 games (140 starts).

Santiago’s suspension is effective immediately. With 59 games remaining in Seattle’s regular season entering Thursday night, the suspension will last into 2022.
