Seattle Mariners left-hander James Paxton will have season-ending Tommy John surgery, manager Scott Servais announced Tuesday.
Paxton had received a second opinion on his ailing left forearm on Monday. He exited the Mariners’ game against the Chicago White Sox on April 6 in the second inning with discomfort in his left arm.
Paxton, making his season debut, retired the side in order in the first inning.
He walked Yoan Moncada leading off the second before a wild pitch advanced the runner to second. Yermin Mercedes then grounded out to first base.
Paxton had a 1-2 count on Andrew Vaughn when the pitcher grimaced after throwing his 24th pitch of the night and walked off the mound after a short chat with a trainer. He was replaced by left-hander Nick Margevicius.
Paxton, 32, returned to the Mariners on a one-year, $8.5 million contract this year after spending two seasons with the New York Yankees. Before that, the native of Ladner, British Columbia, played for Seattle from 2013-18.
He owns a 57-33 record with a 3.59 ERA in 137 career games (all starts) with the Yankees and Mariners.
